House votes on 5% legislative salary cut, ERS changes for prospective employees
May 04, 2011
During Tuesday's House Floor Session, the House voted to bring back to the floor for reconsideration House Bill 575, which would reduce by 5 percent the salaries of legislators, justices and judges, the governor and lieutenant governor, and the directors and deputies of the executive branch. Because the bill must be decked for 24 hours before formally being voted on, the House intends to vote on this measure today, May 5, the last day of the 2011 Legislative Session.
The House also voted to reconsider House Bill 1038, which makes substantive changes to the Hawaii State Employees’ Retirement System (ERS) for prospective employees. The changes, which would only affect employees hired after June 30, 2012, would delay the retirement age, require workers to increase their share of ERS contributions and lower the retirement allowance. Today, the House will vote on this measure, along with House Bill 575 and other bills.
Both Chambers passed House Bill 200 (state budget) and a variety of revenue generating bills as a means to balance the budget. All of the measures that passed final reading will be sent to the Governor for approval.
