A Thanksgiving message from Randy Perreira

November 26, 2013

On behalf of the HGEA staff, and from my family to yours, I’d like to wish you a happy Thanksgiving.

Amidst the retail push to give people an early start on their holiday shopping, with some getting more excited for Black Friday than Thanksgiving, we sometimes forget what this annual holiday in November truly means. Thanksgiving is a day that is all about counting our blessings, spending time with loved ones and reflecting on all we have to be grateful for — our family and friends, our jobs, our health and our community.

It is a time to focus on how fortunate we truly are. While we are enjoying a hearty meal with our families and watching some football, there are many others like the thousands affected by the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines who have lost their loved ones and homes and are struggling to survive. When we think about what they’re going through, our little problems and complaints pale in comparison.

When natural disasters or personal tragedies occur, we see how our global communities come together. And every day, there are individuals and groups in many communities such as here in Hawaii who continually bring people together, especially those in need. This Thanksgiving, as well as on a regular basis, volunteers at Lanakila Meals on Wheels — some of whom are HGEA members and staff — will deliver hot, nutritious meals to homebound seniors. Seeing the challenges of others right here in our own island community, we are reminded once again how lucky we are in our own lives.

Personally, I’m thankful that my wife and daughters are happy and healthy. I’m thankful that we live in a beautiful state with a unique blend of people and cultures. I’m thankful that I work for a respected organization whose members make a positive difference in people’s lives.

I appreciate your continued support. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
