Keith Hayashi Approved as Interim Superintendent of Hawaii's Public Schools

June 18, 2021

Yesterday afternoon, the Hawaii Board of Education unanimously approved Unit 6 member and Waipahu High School Principal Keith Hayashi as the interim superintendent of Hawaii's schools.

Hayashi became principal at Waipahu High School in 2009 and has been credited with elevating public education in Hawaii. Among his achievements, Hayashi launched the state's first Early College program in 2012, which brings professors onto high school campuses to teach college courses. Now, the program has been expanded statewide and this spring, 22 Waipahu High School seniors had earned enough credits to receive a college associate's degree and high school diploma at the same time.

Hayashi will start his term on August 1, 2021 and replaces current Department of Education Superintendent Christina Kishimoto.

Congratulations, Keith!

Special thanks to the many Unit 6 members including the Unit 6 Board of Directors who provided testimony in support of Keith at the June 3 Hawaii Board of Education meeting.
